Guide Overview

This guide explains the Rflect effort score: a set of automated indicators that flag how much effort a student put into a reflection, independent of correctness or quality. It is for lecturers and course facilitators. After reading, you'll know what each score measures, how it is calculated, and how to use it as a first indicator when marking a topic.

Why we introduced it

The effort score flags how much genuine effort a student put into a reflection, independent of correctness or quality. It helps lecturers quickly spot topics or students where engagement was too low — too few answers, too little writing, too little time spent, or likely copy-pasted text — without reading every submission.

Scale questions (incl. competence assessments) are excluded from all effort metrics.

Note: students cannot see their effort score. It is visible to lecturers only (for now).

When This Is Useful

Details - Individual Metrics

image.png

What: the raw metrics measured on every answer a student submits.

Why: these are the building blocks used to score both the topic and the overall effort - everything below is built on top of these five metrics.

How: each metric is scored independently (green / orange / red) against its own thresholds.

Topic Effort Score

What: one score per student per topic, shown in the topic view.

Why: pinpoints exactly which topic effort dropped, rather than only showing a course-wide average.

How: every single answer is classified on its own, the classifications are folded into one effort share for the topic, and that share is compared against the program's completion rate.
